White on White Embroidery

I mentioned that there are two embroidery classes online that I am taking this month. The first is called Embroider Embellish Create and is taught by Karen Ruane. The second one is Sumptuous Surface Embroidery taught by Sharon B.

I am really excited for both of them. Just like with quilting/sewing/knitting/crochet, I am self-taught in embroidery. With all of these processes, I love traditional pieces but I also like to push the boundaries and bring my creation to a new level.

Being self-taught, I don't think I need to take classes to learn basics. With these two, I greatly admire the work that both women produce. Just like with studying art at school, I have found that having a mentor helps the transition from learning to making it your own.

In both classes we are starting out working white on white. Prior to signing up for these classes, I was mostly buying threads as needed for a project.

So I went shopping at the wonderful needlework shop in town for thread. I have always looked at the variety that they offer but not bought much outside of cotton. This time around, I picked up a variety of fibers. There is a variety of cottons here, as well as alpaca, silk, linen, wool, and rayon. All read as white on their own, but together you can see how different white can be.

I will be sharing my progress in these two classes as I delve into them. I hope my explorations inspire you to try new things.
